Instagram and Facebook as Online Home: Not a Proper Home, You need a Website.

There’s a big difference between a website and your social media.

The ultimate 404: When humans go viral but the algorithms still haven’t learned how to find the party.

If your business lives on Instagram or Facebook — and only there — I want to ask you something honest: where do people actually go when they’re ready to say yes?

Not when they’re scrolling. Not when they’re casually liking posts. When they’re ready to hire you, book you, or buy from you — where do they go?

They search. And what they find in that moment is what decides it.

Why is a Profile Is Not a Home

An Instagram and Facebook page is not a proper digital home. It’s a profile. There’s a difference, and once you see it, you can’t unsee it.

A profile is a box someone else built. Every Instagram and Facebook page looks the same — same layout, same link in bio, same character limits, same rules about what you can and can’t post. You don’t own it. You don’t control it. You’re renting space on a social cloud, and the landlord can change the terms whenever they like.

A home is yours. It’s built around your brand, your way. Your story goes where you put it. Your services are described the way you’d describe them. Your booking form, your photos, your pricing, your personality — all of it, no platform telling you what fits and what doesn’t.

One is borrowed space. The other is your actual address.

Social Media Is Brilliant — at One Thing

Here’s where I want to be straight with you, because this isn’t an anti-social-media argument. Social media is genuinely good at what it does. It gets your voice out there. The attention, the awareness, the reach — Instagram and Facebook do that better than a website ever will.

A blog post helps your SEO. A great website builds trust. But neither of them will spread your content the way a well-timed Reels and Posts do. That’s just the honest trade-off.

Social media gets you seen. Your website gets you chosen.

Both matter. The problem isn’t using social media — it’s only using social media.

Here’s the Part Most People Miss

When someone hears about your business — through a friend, a post, a comment — and they want to learn more, they don’t go to Instagram. They Google you.

And here’s what most business owners don’t realize: Google isn’t the only one looking.

AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity are now part of how people find businesses. Someone types “best florist in [your city]” or “who does custom cakes near me” — and these tools pull answers from websites. From real, indexed pages with real information on them.

They don’t recognize you on social media the same way. You might get a search result with an Instagram profile, sure. But it doesn’t give you the full recognition a website does. You’re not in the conversation the same way. In some cases, you’re simply not in it at all.

No website means no results. You’re invisible to the tools people are increasingly using to make decisions.

How Your Website Bridges the Gap Between Search Engines and AI and Local Customers

What a Website Actually Does

Your website is where your information lives — properly, permanently, and findable.

  • Your services, described clearly

  • Your story, told your way

  • Your portfolio, your prices, your contact form

  • Your SEO — the thing that makes Google and AI point to you instead of your competitor

It’s not a replacement for social media. It’s the destination social media points people toward. Your Instagram is the billboard. Your website is the shop.

When someone is ready to move from curious to committed, they need somewhere to land. A profile doesn’t give them that. A home does.

The Real Question

Social media gets you found. Your website gets you trusted.

Run a business on just one or the other and you’re either invisible or untrusted. The two aren’t competing — they’re a team. Social media builds the audience. Your website converts it.

If you’ve been putting off building a proper website because the social pages seem to be “working fine” — I’d gently push back on that. Working fine at what? Getting likes? Getting followers? Or actually getting clients?

Ask yourself: are you missing one or the other?
